I tried to film a volcano and it was a complete disaster

Iceland has a new volcano, Fagradalsfjall: I wanted to visit, to talk about the infrastructure around it, and work out how the country deals with a new and dangerous tourist attraction. It didn't go well.

Thanks to Bjorn Steinbekk, who I thoroughly recommend if you need a fixer or drone pilot in Iceland! www.steinbekk.com/ He's also the person who flew a drone into the lava: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmGKL...

The quote is from Sam Hughes' Ra, which is free online. I thoroughly recommend it: qntm.org/ra

Filmed safely: www.tomscott.com/safe/

  • In case you're wondering, "Icelandic-Mexican fusion cuisine" was a lamb-potato-and-cheese burrito with a skyr-based sauce and it tasted amazing.

  • If you leaned something then you’ve become wiser and if you told others then you’ve given a sacred gift of education. So it wasn’t a failure. Every project can’t work out perfectly. I’ve built a lot of experimental projects. I only succeed about half the time. But when I fail, I always learn much so I become wiser. What’s important is doing projects to help others. Then it’s fun even if it fails and it’s good karma.

  • This is fascinating - it ain't all about lava. 100% this is my favourite video of yours. (SO sorry about the food poisoning - that is awful for your video and for you) I read all the management bits. Don't care if there was lava flowing - the cooled lava (basalt?) was the best thing I've seen. And the Sam Hughes quote! Sometimes you just have to look at what you have instead of what you wanted. Not a failure. Thank you.

  • Tom, you seem to have grown a wee bit whiny this time. I, for my part, prefer such videos where there is no (emerging) egomaniac attitude to videos entertaining an »I need to have a shot of the lava and MYSELF« or »Oh, that Stephen Fry -- so I need to lift Tower Bridge as well« attitude. There has been quite a lot of vanity on LTsoft so far, and I am afraid you (who has made some rather high-quality informative videos indeed) will finally fall victim to the ever the same LTsoftr's illness. So please do not shy back, but every once in a while ground yourself. And be it by reporting about mishaps or inaptitudes. Thanks, heads up (and feet down)!
